An event organized by the The Republic of Türkiye Directorate of Communications celebrated the 101st Republic Day of Türkiye in London on Tuesday, bringing together notable figures from both Turkish and British circles at the National Gallery.
Attendees included Türkiye’s Ambassador to the UK, Osman Koray Ertaş, and Stephen Doughty, the UK’s Minister of State for Europe, North America, and Overseas Territories. Joining them were Kenan Poleo, British Consul General in Istanbul.

The high turnout, featuring British parliamentarians and members of the Turkish expatriate community, highlighted the close bonds between Türkiye and the UK. Following the national anthems of both countries, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan addressed the audience via video.

Ambassador Ertaş, in his address, emphasized the strong sense of republican consciousness among Turks in the UK. “This high attendance reflects the pride and dedication of our community to the Republic,” he said. Ertaş also acknowledged the solemn undertone of this year’s celebrations following a recent terrorist attack in Ankara, emphasizing shared resilience: “We are all part of a great family, sharing both joy and sorrow.”

The evening also featured a message from Turkey’s Communications Director Fahrettin Altun, who extended Republic Day greetings and expressed gratitude for international support for Türkiye.
A Partnership of Strength and Solidarity
Stephen Doughty, the UK’s Minister of State, reaffirmed the growing strength of Turkish-British relations. He emphasized the UK’s solidarity with Türkiye against terrorism, recalling the recent attack in Ankara. He noted, “The UK stands shoulder to shoulder with Turkey,” adding that the bond between the two countries is bolstered through trade and mutual cultural appreciation.

A Diverse Gathering of International Representatives
Attendees included Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to the UK Elin Suleymanov, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus London Representative Ambassador Çimen Keskin, Turkish Consul General in London Korkut Tufan, Palestine Mission Head Ambassador Husam Zomlot, and Turkish Embassy Communications Counsellor Büşra Karaduman Aktuna.

Also present were Colonel Gökhan Tozman, Türkiye’s Air Attaché in London, London Deputy Mayor Mete Çoban, Bexley Council Mayor Ahmet Durmuş, European Turkish Brands Association President Vehbi Keleş, TBCCI President Emma Edhem, İşbank UK General Manager Mete Uluyurt, and numerous UK Parliament members, underscoring the close ties between Türkiye and the UK.

Reflections on the 101st Anniversary of the Republic
The Republic of Turkey celebrated its 101st anniversary with a significant reception at the Turkish Embassy in London, hosted by Ambassador Osman Koray Ertaş and his wife, Sevcan Ertaş. British Consul General in Istanbul, Kenan Poleo, alongside other notable guests, attended the event, highlighting the enduring diplomatic ties between Turkey and the UK.

During his speech, Poleo expressed his honor and pleasure at joining the celebration, sharing a personal sentiment about his late father and his pride in witnessing Turkey’s presence on the global stage. Reflecting on the centennial milestone, he emphasized the robust and growing bilateral relationship between Turkey and the UK, describing it as “unstoppable” when the two nations collaborate. Poleo highlighted the strong trade relations and strategic alliances across various sectors, from energy and technology to security and defense. He stated, “The UK and Turkey are collaborating to drive mutual growth, create jobs, and promote prosperity for both our people.”
Poleo also conveyed the UK’s solidarity with Turkey, especially in response to recent terror attacks in Ankara, and assured ongoing cooperation in security matters.
